“Whatever you like,” Caterina said. “You’re free to explore the downtown area or just to read or nap. I’ve got sandwich stuff for dinner. I’m going to quietly read a bit and then go to bed early tonight,” she said. “Just be sure to lock up if you do go out.” She gave her a key to the front door so she could come and go as she pleased.

She took her sandwich into her bedroom with her, glad to be alone at last. Veda was pleasant enough, but she felt socially overwhelmed. Plus, she wanted to catch up with Tanya, and she didn’t want to text; she wanted to call and hear it from her straight.

But the call went to voicemail, and then she got a text: “Rhys is here. Call you later”

That was not expected.

Now she was at loose ends, and her thoughts turned to Remy. That one kiss in her bed was, by far, the most romantic interlude of her life. She recalled the sex with her college boyfriend, Mark. His kisses were wet and sloppy; she was always trying to surreptitiously wipe off the extra saliva with her hand and then dry it on her pants or on the sheets. Thankfully, the kissing never went on for very long. He’d roughly jab a finger into her a few times, apparently believing that was adequate foreplay. From there, he’d put on the condom and very quickly push into her. It didn’t precisely hurt, but it was uncomfortable. It might have actually been painful, she knew, if the thrusting had gone on for very long, but it never did.

She’d remembered confiding to Tanya once that she thought she was lacking some kind of essential womanhood, because she really didn’t feel like she was missing out on anything by remaining celibate all these years since college. She had expected Tanya, who was equally celibate, to agree with her. But she didn’t.

“Oh, my, no. I miss it terribly,” Tanya had said. “It was magical with Brian. That’s why I won’t settle for anyone else. It could never be like that with any other man,” she’d said. After that, Catarina had kept her thoughts about sex to herself.

She had always thought Tanya must have been exaggerating what lovemaking with Brian had been like. Magical? That was grief-inspired memory, she’d concluded. But now she wasn’t so sure. Even though Remy had done nothing overtly sexual, she could see, for the first time, at least a glimpse of what Tanya had described.

Kissing Remy was nothing like kissing Mark. And even now, she felt something — maybe an ache? — deep inside that she’d never felt before. It was a feeling of missing something, and she knew exactly what it was her body was missing, even though it was something she’d never really had before. And she knew she wanted Remy to kiss her again. However, now she had the complication of Veda camping out in her living room.

She called Tanya again. It again went straight to voicemail.
